In 1997 and 1998 a few of the senior guides of SAFE Team took the first classes on Cave Rescue, Swift Water Rescue and Wilderness First Responder that were taught in Belize by instructor Bruce Hagen of Outworld Medical Rescue Services out of California and Dr. Keith Brown of the University of Nebraska School Of Medicine, these guides were the first members of a new team that was christened the Belize Disaster and Rescue Response Team (BDARRT). Owner and General Manager of Maya Guide Adventures, Marcos Cucul, was one of those first rescue students and BDARRT member.
As the years passed Belize’s tourism industry grew and with it grew the need for professional and responsible tour guides and tour leaders. For us it is essential to have tour guides that are well versed in promoting fun activities, that are experienced in technical safety and risk management and this is where SAFE Team expertise plays a vital role. Apart from national certifications all SAFE Team members have been certified by international institutions. A few members are dive masters and hold certifications in fields such as Cave and Wilderness Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, High Angle Rescue, Technical Rope Rescue Systems, Combat Life Saver, Emergency First Responder and Emergency Medicine Technicians.
19 years after the first rescue classes Marcos Cucul turns out to be Instructor and First Incident Commander of the Belize Disaster and Rescue Response Team. Walter Santos, from the 1998 rescue classes, is the founder of the Belize School of Outdoor Leadership Training (BSOLT), recognized by the Belize Tourism Board as being part of the High Risk Tourist Activities Technical Committee. These two independent bodies function together, BDARRT being the rescue team and BSOLT being the school; it is out of these two bodies that SAFE Team is handpicked – a highly trained and very capable elite set of guides to ensure that your fun adventures are memorable and safe.
